A Terrifying Encounter: When a Python Pays a Visit
Imagine waking up in the dead of night, only to discover a massive, slithering intruder on your chest. This is exactly what happened to Rachel Bloor, an Australian woman, who experienced a heart-stopping moment that left her in a state of disbelief.
As she stirred in her bed on Monday night, Bloor's hand reached out for her dog, but instead, she encountered a smooth, unexpected creature. Half asleep and in a state of confusion, she couldn't quite comprehend what was happening.
"I was in a daze, and then I felt this heavy weight on my chest. It was like a bad dream, but it was very real," Bloor recalled.
As she retreated under the covers, her partner turned on the lamp, revealing the truth - a 2.5-meter python had made its way into their bedroom.
"I couldn't believe my eyes. My partner said, 'Don't move, there's a huge python on you.' I was in shock," she explained.
Bloor's first reaction was to swear, and her second, to ensure the safety of her beloved dogs. She knew her Dalmatian's instinct would be to protect her, and she didn't want any harm to come to her pets.
"I quickly secured the dogs outside the room, and my husband wished he could join them. I had to be careful not to startle the snake and cause any harm to my family," she added.
As she carefully extracted herself from under the covers, Bloor couldn't help but feel a sense of disbelief. The python, a non-venomous carpet python, had likely entered through the shutters on her window.
"I was so focused on getting myself and the snake out of the situation safely that I didn't have time to process the strangeness of it all. It was only later that I realized how bizarre and unique this encounter was," she said.
Once free from the python, Bloor took matters into her own hands, quite literally. She carefully guided the snake back out through the window, its long body still partially visible through the shutters.
"It was an incredible sight. The python was so calm and unbothered by my presence. I felt a sense of respect for this wild creature, even though it had given me quite a scare," she admitted.
Bloor's husband, on the other hand, was not as composed. Having grown up around snakes, she remained calm, but she acknowledged that not everyone would have the same reaction.
"I think snakes sense our energy. If we remain calm, they often mirror that calmness. But I understand that for many, this encounter would be terrifying," she said.
And here's where it gets controversial: Bloor revealed that if the intruder had been a cane toad, her reaction would have been entirely different. These pests, considered one of the country's most damaging and unattractive creatures, would have sent her into a panic.
"Cane toads make me physically ill. The thought of encountering one sends shivers down my spine. So, if it had been a cane toad, I might have reacted very differently," she confessed.
Fortunately, this story has a happy ending. All animals and humans involved emerged unscathed. Carpet pythons, common in coastal Australia, typically feed on small mammals like birds, and this particular python seemed content with its unexpected bed-sharing experience.
