The James Webb Space Telescope has potentially solved the enigma of the 'little red dots' in space, a phenomenon that captivated scientists for years. In December 2022, just six months after its launch, the telescope revealed a surprising sight: countless small red objects in the sky, which NASA scientists dubbed 'little red dots' (LRDs). This discovery sparked a puzzle for astronomers, as the LRDs defied conventional expectations. Initially, scientists theorized that these dots could be either extremely dense galaxies or supermassive black holes. However, the puzzle deepened as the dots were too massive and mature to be early galaxies, yet they didn't emit the X-rays and radio waves typically associated with supermassive black holes. This led to a conundrum, as the LRDs were too dense to form quickly, contradicting the Webb findings. The Copenhagen researchers' analysis, published in Nature, suggests a fascinating explanation. They propose that the 'little red dots' are young black holes, concealed by a cocoon of gas they are consuming to grow. As the gas is consumed, the black holes emit heat, creating light that shines through the cocoon, giving the dots their distinctive red hue. This theory not only explains the mystery of the LRDs but also offers a potential resolution to how they fit into existing theories about the universe's evolution. The study's lead author, Vadim Rusakov, emphasizes the unique disguise of these black holes, which effectively suppresses X-ray and radio emissions.
