Unveiling HS2's Tunnel Vision: A Journey from West London to Euston (2026)

The ambitious HS2 high-speed rail project is forging ahead with a crucial tunneling phase, but lingering questions about its ultimate cost and completion date cast a long shadow. The journey of HS2 into the heart of London is now underway, as construction has officially commenced on the tunnel that will link West London to the bustling Euston station. This significant milestone was marked on Tuesday when Rail Minister Lord Hendy, alongside Darren Jones, the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, initiated the operation of the first of two colossal tunnel boring machines at Old Oak Common.

These impressive machines, each a staggering 190 meters in length, are not just feats of engineering; they are also named in honor of pioneering women. The first to be activated, aptly named Madeleine, pays tribute to Madeleine Nobbs, a former president of the Women's Engineering Society. Her companion, the second boring machine, is christened Karen, in recognition of Karen Harrison, the UK's first female train driver, who was once based at the very same Old Oak Common depot.

But here's where it gets controversial... The future of HS2 is still shrouded in considerable uncertainty, particularly concerning its overall budget and the precise timeline for completion. Whispers abound that the project's price tag could balloon to an astonishing £100 billion, a figure that remains a concern even after significant sections of the line, specifically those planned for Manchester and Leeds, were controversially scrapped.

Madeleine, a marvel of German engineering, arrived in the UK in numerous pieces. It took the power of a colossal 750-tonne crane to meticulously lift these components into a specially constructed underground chamber at the station's edge, where the machine was then painstakingly reassembled.

And this is the part most people miss... The path to Euston has been a rocky one, fraught with financial anxieties and shifting political will. Under the previous government, serious doubts were raised about whether HS2 would even reach Euston, primarily due to escalating funding concerns. In 2023, work on a new station at Euston was notably put on hold. Then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had indicated that extending the high-speed rail line from Old Oak Common to Euston would be heavily dependent on securing substantial private investment.

However, a glimmer of hope emerged in October when Chancellor Rachel Reeves, in her Budget announcement, formally committed the necessary funding to kickstart the crucial tunneling work towards Euston. Despite this commitment, the exact visual blueprint of the Euston station and its definitive completion date remain elusive. A new entity, the Euston Delivery Company, is slated to spearhead the development of what the government describes as an "affordable and integrated transport hub." However, this crucial new body has yet to be officially established.

The government maintains that extending HS2 all the way to Euston is "essential to unlocking the project's full economic potential."
