Traditionally, the hospitality industry, particularly restaurant servers and food delivery personnel, have heavily depended on tips to boost their income. Janick Cormier, Vice President Atlantic with Restaurants Canada, sheds light on the growing issue, describing it as 'tipping fatigue.' She points out a crucial cultural distinction: "Tipping at a restaurant has always been part of our culture, but tipping a mechanic has not." This highlights a key point: the expectation of a tip is no longer confined to the service industry.
This shift is causing a lot of confusion and, frankly, frustration among consumers. As Cormier puts it, "Canadians are getting a bit tired of being asked to pay more than what they’re used to paying and being prompted for a tip; they feel bad if they don’t have to give a tip in certain situations."
