Springbok Bok Forward’s Insights on Sharks' Coaching Turnaround | JP Pietersen's Impact (2026)

Sharks' Coaching Changes: A New Perspective from a Bok Forward

A Springbok flanker shared his insights on the impact of interim Sharks coach JP Pietersen, ahead of their Round Nine United Rugby Championship match against the Lions. The team's fortunes have taken a turn for the better since Pietersen took over from former head coach John Plumtree.

The Sharks' season began on a low note, winning just one match under Plumtree's leadership across all competitions. However, Pietersen's influence has been transformative. The team has won back-to-back games against Saracens (Champions Cup) and the Bulls (URC), showcasing a more positive and dynamic brand of rugby.

Loose forward Tshituka credited Pietersen's leadership and methods, stating that the players have responded positively. He believes the Sharks can turn their URC and Champions Cup fortunes around, thanks to the coach's influence.

Tshituka reflected on the team's journey, saying, "It's been quite an exciting time at the Sharks, with two good wins after a tough start to the season. It helped us build momentum and confidence, which we desperately needed. JP [Pietersen] has challenged us to reach new heights, lifting our standards in everything we do."

The players have embraced a culture of personal responsibility, with many driving the team's success. Tshituka noted, "There are a lot of players taking personal responsibility and driving the cause. There's been a lot of buy-in from the players over the past couple of weeks to be a great team."

The team's confidence is high as they prepare for a South African derby against the Lions. Tshituka said, "This week has been quite nice, with a buzz going around to play in a South African derby. It's always a big one against the Lions and a spectacle, so we expect nothing less than that. We feel confident and ready, and we're looking forward to the challenge. The guys are quite excited, and we feel that we can turn the season around."
