The New York Mets are making a significant move! They've just signed free agent infielder Jorge Polanco to a two-year contract, a deal worth a cool $40 million, as reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan. This acquisition comes at a crucial time for the Mets, who have seen key players like Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz depart via free agency, along with a trade that sent Brandon Nimmo to Texas. This move has sparked a lot of discussion among fans and analysts alike.
But here's where it gets interesting: Polanco, represented by the Octagon Agency, is expected to primarily fill the role of first baseman and designated hitter for the Mets, despite his history as a second baseman. The team already has Marcus Semien, who was acquired in the Nimmo deal. Polanco could also see some action at third base, indicating the Mets' strategy to replace Alonso at first base.
Polanco, at 32 years old, is coming off a strong season with the Mariners, where he hit .265/.326/.495 with 26 home runs in 524 plate appearances. This performance was a remarkable comeback after a less impressive 2024 season. His impressive 2025 season included a 132 wRC+, the highest of his career, and a significant reduction in strikeouts. His .269 BABIP suggests he might have even deserved better numbers.
However, a notable aspect of Polanco's 2025 season was his 89 appearances as a designated hitter, a substantial increase from his previous career stats. He also sustained an oblique injury that affected his playing time in the field, and his usage against left-handed pitchers was reduced.
The Mets' decision to use Polanco at first base raises some questions. Given his age, his defensive stats at second and third base, and Semien's presence at second, this move seems strategic. Polanco has only played first base once in his career, making this a significant positional shift.
This signing doesn't necessarily close the door on the Mets pursuing other targets, such as Cody Bellinger or even a first base-specific player like Willson Contreras. With Alonso and Nimmo gone, the Mets' offense has taken a hit, but upgrading the defense is a key goal for Mets president of operations David Stearns.
MLB Trade Rumors had projected a three-year, $42 million deal for Polanco, but he opted for the higher average annual value of the two-year deal. This shorter term aligns with Stearns' preference for shorter commitments. The Pirates, Red Sox, and even the Mariners showed interest in Polanco. Now, the Mariners might shift their focus to Eugenio Suarez or other infield options.
