A significant proposal has emerged regarding the establishment of a temporary marketplace while the Open Market in Huddersfield undergoes major renovations. This historic Grade II listed building is set to receive a substantial investment of £16.5 million for its refurbishment. However, it's important to note that planning permission is still pending, and the proposed plans have already faced considerable opposition from the public.
Kirklees Council asserts that this project aims to "future-proof" the market, ensuring its relevance and functionality for generations to come. If the proposal receives approval, the temporary market will be situated on land adjacent to the current market on Brook Street, featuring 36 indoor stalls and 29 outdoor stalls, along with ample car parking, an office for market operations, restroom facilities, and space for waste disposal.
The council emphasizes that the layout of the temporary market is designed to optimize trading space while ensuring safe access remains available to the nearby Tesco store. According to insights from the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the application acknowledges that the demand for market stalls can vary significantly, noting that there will be occasions when the demand outstrips the available supply.
In a supporting statement, Kirklees Council concluded that this proposed temporary market is ideally located next to the main market area and will utilize lightweight, removable construction materials, which are fully reversible. They claim that the effects on the surrounding Conservation Area and the historic Market Hall will be both limited and temporary.
The council argues that this initiative would sustain market activities during the redevelopment phase, thereby preserving employment opportunities and encouraging public engagement in the town center. Despite the promising outlook, the plans have sparked a wave of concerns among locals, culminating in a petition signed by approximately 1,000 individuals.
Many of these objections stem from fears that the redevelopment could jeopardize the viability of certain vendors, particularly since the market's focus appears to lean heavily towards food sales, which could place it in competition with local supermarkets and businesses.
Nonetheless, Kirklees Council insists that the initiative is crucial for maintaining the market as a vibrant destination in Huddersfield, where local enterprises can flourish. A decision regarding the temporary market's future is anticipated by January 19.
