Among the lenses, the standout is the GF-mount lens for the GFX Eterna 55, a video-centric offering. The two X-mount lenses, while functional, are uninspiring. But here's where it gets controversial: are these lenses truly bad, or are they just boring?

From X half to GFX100RF: Fujifilm's Camera Odyssey
Fujifilm's camera releases in 2025 were a mix of the innovative and the unexpected. We'll start with the GFX Eterna 55, a cinema camera unveiled in September 2025. With a 102-megapixel sensor, it offers exceptional versatility for cinematographers, but its slow readout speed is a limitation.
Next up is the GFX100RF, a medium-format fixed-lens camera. It's like the X100VI, but with a grown-up twist. Combining the 102-megapixel sensor with a sharp 28mm equivalent f/4 lens, it offers impressive image quality. However, the lack of IBIS and the slow aperture might be a deal-breaker for some.
"The Fujifilm GFX100RF is a bold experiment. It takes the essence of the X100 series and adds a whole new level of image quality and versatility. It's a camera that pushes boundaries, and I, for one, am excited to see where this leads," says Chris Niccolls.
Fujifilm then took a leap with the X half, a compact camera with an 18-megapixel Type 1 sensor. While it lacks in imaging capabilities, it makes up for it in style and fun. The X half is a unique take on digital photography, capturing the spirit of analog film.
The Fujifilm X-E5 followed, an interchangeable lens camera with a 40-megapixel sensor. It offers a rangefinder-inspired design, a dedicated Film Simulation dial, and fantastic image quality. For those who love the X100VI but crave versatility, the X-E5 is the perfect solution.

The Lens Drought
Now, let's talk about Fujifilm's lens releases, or rather, the lack thereof. 2025 saw only three new lenses, and one of them is highly specialized. This is a far cry from the productive years of 2022 and 2021, where Fujifilm released a plethora of lenses for both its APS-C X Series and medium-format GFX system.
The XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR, announced alongside the X-E5, is a compact and affordable 35mm equivalent prime lens. It's a nice addition to the X Series lineup. The XC 13-33mm f/3.5-6.3 OIS is the smallest X Series zoom lens, offering a 20-50mm equivalent focal length.
While these lenses are functional, they lack the excitement factor. Fujifilm has a vast range of older XF lenses that could use an upgrade to keep up with modern sensor and autofocus advancements. It's time for Fujifilm to step up its lens game.
The GF 32-90mm T3.5 Power Zoom, the most expensive GFX lens yet, was teased in 2023 and released in 2025. With Fujinon's green accents, it's a beauty, but it's a niche product, not for the average user.
Grading Fujifilm's 2025 Performance
Fujifilm is undoubtedly gearing up for its next generation of cameras. 2025 felt like a transitional year, with some exciting releases but also some misses. The GFX100RF is a bold and innovative camera, and the X-E5 is an excellent addition to the lineup. The X half is a fun experiment, but it falls short technically.
Fujifilm has the potential to deliver truly incredible products, and it's never afraid to take risks. However, 2025 didn't showcase the company's best work. I'm confident that 2026 will bring some impressive surprises. For now, Fujifilm gets a C+ for its 2025 performance.
