Imagine this: a high-speed race, a kangaroo, and a heart-stopping collision. Christopher Mies, a seasoned racer, shares his incredible story of survival.
During the 2026 Bathurst 12 Hour, Mies, alongside his teammates Broc Feeney and Dennis Olsen, experienced a life-threatening moment. Traveling at an astonishing 250km/h on the Conrod Straight, Mies collided with a kangaroo, an incident that could have had devastating consequences.
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite the impact, Mies walked away unscathed. He credits the exceptional safety features of the Ford Mustang GT3, which, in its pre-Evo configuration, proved its worth. Mies' initial reaction was one of relief and gratitude for his survival.
However, the aftermath was not without its challenges. The impact was so severe that the remains of the kangaroo ended up inside the cockpit, covering Mies' helmet and racing suit. An unpleasant reminder of the incident, Mies humorously noted that "a kangaroo from the inside doesn't smell very nice."
And this is the part most people miss... Despite the shock and the mess, Mies' love for Australia remains unwavering. He plans to return to Mount Panorama next year, but with a different souvenir in mind for his son. No more kangaroo toys; instead, he'll opt for a koala or wombat, a lighthearted decision amidst a serious situation.
