The Carolina Panthers are on the brink of making a playoff appearance, thanks to their recent triumph over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coach Dave Canales expressed the uplifting atmosphere in the locker room following the thrilling 23-20 win, stating, "Hope, belief... Everything's right in front of us." This victory has propelled the Panthers to a one-game lead in the NFC South with two games remaining in the regular season.
Looking ahead, if the Panthers secure a win against the Seattle Seahawks next week and the Buccaneers (currently at 7-8) fall to the Miami Dolphins, or if they clinch a victory in their final game against Tampa, the Panthers (now sitting at 8-7) will mark their first playoff berth since 2017.
"This win means everything," said guard Austin Corbett. "It encapsulates all the hard work we put in during the offseason and reflects the goals we set for ourselves—namely to compete for the division title."
Corbett humorously recalled a moment late in the first quarter when he accidentally stepped on the ankle of quarterback Bryce Young, who had been struggling with an injury. "Gosh dang it, I owe you dinner!" Corbett quipped, attempting to lighten the mood while ensuring his young son didn’t overhear the full extent of his apology.
Fortunately for Corbett, Young demonstrated remarkable resilience. He threw two touchdown passes and orchestrated the drive that led to the game-winning field goal, positioning the Panthers favorably in their quest for the division crown.
However, it’s important to note that victory next week is crucial; if Carolina loses to the Seahawks and Tampa Bay wins against Miami, the Buccaneers would regain control heading into the final game.
This underscores the significance of Sunday’s win, particularly for Corbett, who feared his misstep could derail their chances at the playoffs. After starting the season 0-2 and later falling to 1-3, the Panthers appeared to be long shots for postseason play, trailing the Buccaneers by two games after eight weeks.
Yet, the tides have turned. The Buccaneers have stumbled, losing three consecutive games and six out of their last seven, allowing the Panthers to surge ahead, even without winning back-to-back contests since October.
A key factor in Carolina's success this season has been Young, who boasts an 8-5 record. His performance includes six victories achieved through fourth-quarter or overtime game-winning drives, marking an impressive total of 12 such instances since being drafted first overall in 2023. This figure puts him ahead of notable quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen, each with 10 during the same period.
Of his 14 career wins, a striking 12 have involved a game-winning drive. However, few, if any, of these victories carry as much weight as Sunday’s due to the high stakes involved. Tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders praised Young’s poise under pressure, saying, "That's leadership, that's mental toughness, that's everything you want in a quarterback."
Sanders was pivotal in the game, catching Young’s second touchdown pass—a crucial 6-yarder with just eight seconds left in the third quarter, which gave Carolina a 20-17 lead. Young nearly faced a sack as pressure mounted, but he skillfully escaped outside linebacker Yaya Diaby’s grasp, buying time before spotting a wide-open Sanders at the back of the end zone.
Remarkably, it took Young 6.67 seconds to execute the throw, setting a personal record for the longest duration taken on any touchdown pass. This was particularly impressive given the earlier injury scare caused by Corbett stepping on his ankle. Young, however, remained unfazed, brushing off the discomfort and asserting, "We’re all playing through something at this time of year."
Canales acknowledged Young’s vital role in the team’s playoff pursuit, emphasizing, "Bryce was just taking what was there. The Buccaneers did a great job of mixing things up. He made smart decisions with the ball, throwing it away when necessary, and extending plays when possible."
