Australia's All-Pace Attack for Boxing Day Ashes Test: Spinner Snubbed! | Cricket News (2026)

BREAKING NEWS: Australia Chooses All-Pace Attack, Leaving Spinner Out for Boxing Day Test

In a surprising turn of events, Australian stand-in captain Steve Smith has announced that spinner Todd Murphy will not be part of the lineup for the highly anticipated Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Instead, the Australian team is preparing to unleash an entirely pace-focused bowling attack for the fourth Ashes Test against England.

On Friday morning, the team plans to assess the pitch one last time before finalizing their starting eleven. The competition for the remaining two spots is heating up among Michael Neser, Brendan Doggett, and the return of fast bowler Jhye Richardson. "We will evaluate the wicket and consider how best to manage our bowling options," Smith explained to reporters on Thursday morning.

Interestingly, Australia opted not to include a specialist spinner during the recent pink-ball Test at the Gabba, controversially leaving out Nathan Lyon in favor of Neser and Doggett. This decision proved successful as Australia secured an impressive eight-wicket victory in Brisbane.

To make room for Smith's return—after he missed the previous Test in Adelaide due to illness—reserve wicketkeeper Josh Inglis has been dropped from the squad. Additionally, team captain Pat Cummins and Lyon are both sidelined due to injuries.

Smith also revealed that veteran player Usman Khawaja and wicketkeeper Alex Carey will occupy the No. 5 and No. 6 batting positions respectively. Cameron Green, who has struggled with form recently, will slide down to No. 7. Previously, Green batted at No. 3 during the World Test Championship final and the Frank Worrell Trophy series in the West Indies. However, since returning from back surgery earlier this year, he has averaged only 22.00 with the bat.

Meanwhile, Richardson, who has battled injuries, might be set to end a four-year hiatus from Test cricket, as his last appearance was back in December 2021.

The much-anticipated fourth Ashes Test between Australia and England is scheduled to commence at the MCG on Friday at 10:30 AM AEDT.
